American Hope tax credit Question about buying a computer.
In 2009, I was in my 5th year college. I bought a computer and I wanted to know if I am eligible for the tax credit for that purchase. The main reason I a computer was so I could use it for school. The classes were on campus, but many tests and quizzes were only available online school program through WebCT. In addition, for many projects that I had to fill the necessary information to a computer via a program statistics. Would this purchase qualify for this credit? I want to see my accountant in the next few days, but he hopes that someone here would have a better understanding about this then I do. Thank you in advance for your time and answer 10 points!
Q5. Is this an expense eligible for a computer to American opportunity tax credit? A. Whether an expenditure for a computer qualifies for the credit depends on facts. An expenditure for a computer would be eligible for this credit if the computer is required as a condition of enrollment or participation educational institution. So it looks like if she needed to attend school so yes it does qualify. If one of the categories you need a PC then I would say yes. Because you're in your 5th year it would fall into the section of credit life and I think that only was purchased from the school would be eligible. Above all, I would check with my accountant. Below is the link to the FAQ entry for credit. http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,, id = 211,309.00. html
